Hello and good morning fine people of Oppositelock, I am requesting your assistance in finding a new set of speakers for my 2004 Acura TSX. I want to get new 6.5" speakers for all four doors and 2 new 6"x9" speakers for the rear. Budget is about $200 all-in, as I’m not looking for state of the art stuff, just something with some improvement over the OEM set up. I’m looking for a system that has good mids and highs, and solid bass. I want to go new and preferably from amazon(free trial of prime).
I’ve never had upgraded speakers, and would like to upgrade the head unit, but with the dash design it would require a special frame and adapters which seem quite expensive. Because of this I would like to only do speakers, but am kind of lost on what all to look for, and what would be some good equipment to start out with.
Have a Porsche GT3 I detailed not too long ago for your time and assistance:

I’m definitely not an expert but what if you try a sub/amp setup for the bass and take all the base out of the door speakers. I think that would be a low budget way to bump the sound. the door speakers probably cant handle as much bass but will still sound good with just the mid/high levels

Go on Crutchfield, play around with the “what fits my car” stuff, then comparison price shop on Amazon and other places.

Your budget is really tough. But I did find you some good speakers that should work for you. MB Quart is a good brand. I've used them before and they really are a great sounding speaker, even when powered by a factory headunit.

I would look at eBay by speaker size and compare ohm ratings to original. I’ve beat Amazon a few times on speakers there for brand names. Got 4 Blaupunkts that fit a Nissan we had for $15 each shipped. The ones I bought were way higher wattage rated than factories, were substantially better made and sounded exceptional. They were bulk ones with grilles being sold individually. I had to change wire terminals to install them but it was no big deal.

100% agree. Install a small enclosed sub with a mono amp that has a control filtering out mid and high frequency. Keep the factory speakers. Isolate the bass to the sub and have the door speakers just do mid and treble.
It’s not difficult to do. But a bit more tedious (and spendy) than swapping out some speakers.

FWIW, I was in the same boat with an IS300 a few years ago (that had a nice enough Clarion head unit already), same speaker sizes too. Decided to buy some Alpine Type-R speakers and I was disappointed in the end result since there was not enough real meaty bottom end (not talking about thumping, just clear low end). I didn’t read if you have a head unit, but a head unit upgrade can do a lot for you. I had the factory Mark Levinson full system (with the factory center channel and sub) in my GS430, but the head unit was actually holding it back (much like the faffy transmission in these cars). Midrange was not really there and there was no more than the adjustments of an econo box (high/low/front/rear/LOL). Just a head unit with full control over equalizing and bass was all that car needed to be satisfying. Even the sub was barely doing anything before. Just my 2 cents about saving money on useful upgrades.

Going with a sub right now doesn’t make a ton of sense to me right now because that would eat up most(if not all)of my budget, leaving nothing for the other speakers. Right now, I have really boomy bass in the 6x9's, so I definitely want to replace those. Does that make sense?

I’ve gotten somewhat frustrated with crutch field because there has been several discrepancies on sizes between Amazon, crutch field, and the manufacturer. For example I was looking at some Rockford Fosgate 6.5's on Amazon, but crutch field said they wouldn’t fit my car because they were 6.75". I checked with RF, and they are said to be 6.5".
Wouldn’t all 6.5" fit it my car?
I do however like that crutch field includes install gear and guides for free with most orders.

Those are a little over budget, but I will give them a look. Thanks!

my theory is that if you use the money on a sub and a band filter, the door speakers would sound better because they don’t have the bass going to them which would be supplemented my the amp so the overall would sound better.

At first getting a new head unit was my goal, but looking into it I would need a whole kit of framing products and tools that would cost almost $200 from crutch field by itself, not even including the unit itself. Instal would be a PIA too with having to change out the fascia around the media and A/C controls too

Ok, I’ll check into that. Do you have some recommendations on what all to get?

nope. thats about as far as i can get you. I’d think you could get a decent sub/box.amp for $150 and then the wiring and whatnot.

Not all 6.5" speakers fit in all 6.5" speaker openings, because of depth. Crutchfield takes additional measurements like depth of the speaker and the hole in the door. I’d be more inclined to go by their guidance than Amazon.

Ok, thanks. Things just have to be complicated, don’t they?

Hopefully your factory head unit is better than my experience. I have also noticed some sources like equalized sound from an iPod can improve the overall experience too.

I’ve messed with equalizer in the head unit and through my iPhone but my main problem is the sound is not very crisp at all with stock speakers
